A sharp decline in student performance since COVID is a growing concern for parents, students and educators everywhere.

It's also a significant concern for one of Asheville’s most significant philanthropic organizations, Dogwood Health Trust, which is charged with distributing funds each year, equivalent to 5% of its total $1.5 billion endowment. For the organization, it is a challenge and responsibility not to be taken lightly.

“We want to make sure that our investments with the community are anchored and tethered to the data that’s available,” said Dogwood Vice President for Education Ereka Williams.

Data is what they’re after.

Dogwood has commissioned a new study to analyze the 18 counties of western North Carolina to determine how -- and where -- the Trust might make the biggest impact.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, Dogwood announced the results of the K-12 Landscape Study. The report was put together by the Education Policy Initiative at Carolina (EPIC), located at UNC Chapel Hill. The study measured levels of student achievement as assessed through testing, course grades, attendance, graduation rates and disciplinary records.

Dogwood's objective was to gather a more complete picture of the status of students in the Trust’s targeted region. The study also looked at factors including demographics, poverty, ethnicity, race, ability and disability in assessing the needs of area students.
