The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners heard Tuesday night about a new grant available to the county’s justice services.

The Dogwood Health Trust grant is meant to support inmates who are released from jail, particularly, those with mental health and substance abuse issues.

"The purpose of this grant is not only to improve public health outcomes for our community and justice involved individuals but also to sustain some of our jail population reduction," Justice Services Department director Tiffany Iheanacho said.

Iheanacho said the grant aims to help reduce overdose deaths and emergency room visits for those released from jail with chronic mental and physical illness. She asked the commission to accept the grant and approve the budget amendment at its meeting in November
