When COVID-19 came to Western North Carolina, one thing was quickly apparent – the region wasn’t going to be first in line for important resources like COVID-19 testing capacity. With other, more populous urban areas in our state and across the nation vying for attention, Dogwood Health Trust realized that there was an opportunity to both meet the need for testing and help build our regional economy by finding an experienced and trusted lab that was willing, ready and able to add COVID-19 testing to its offerings. After careful exploration, Sanesco Health emerged as a partner ready for an impact investment.
“We were extremely excited by Dogwood’s mission and directive. Our hearts quickly got attached to the project,” says Marcos Romero, Director of Technology. “We knew we could make an impact for current and potential customers with COVID-19, but realized we could make a bigger impact right in our own backyard with a partner who is deeply rooted here.”
A family-owned company headquartered in Arden, Sanesco has been providing lab services to roughly 900 physician practices and distributors across the United States and Canada for 15 years. After building a successful business focused on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal functioning, Marcos, his father, Hector, and the clinical team decided that they could deliver even greater value by testing for COVID-19.
“At first we were just focusing on COVID-19 molecular testing as the gold standard, but we quickly realized that other platforms could be complementary to that test. Our medical director thought in terms of MDs looking for faster, more comprehensive answers for their patients now and in the future.”
For the Romero family, the lab business is about much more than performing tests – it’s about delivering value for a community that they love very much. Hector and his wife, Rosana, moved to WNC 22 years ago from Miami.
“When we arrived to Asheville for the very first time, there was an immediate connection,” Hector says. “It has become a home away from home, and our business has provided the opportunity to give back to the community in our small way. The most exciting aspect of this great project is how together we can impact the health of our community, our region, and possibly our great state.”

All of WNC and beyond.
