Mackenzie Mealing

Passionate about advancing health equity and community well-being in Western North Carolina, Mackenzie joins Dogwood as a Fellow. She recently graduated from the University of North Carolina Asheville and holds a Bachelor of Science in Health. She concentrated her studies on public health, nutrition, and food systems.

Mackenzie’s commitment to community-driven solutions is grounded in both research and direct service. Her published undergraduate research explored Traditional Chinese Medicine and complementary therapies for Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. At the same time, her community volunteer work has centered on improving access to resources that support long-term health and well-being. She has worked closely with Bounty & Soul, helping expand access to nutritious food in rural WNC communities and contributing to the launch of the Covenant Share Market in Fairview, NC. She has also promoted food as medicine through community education and accessible nutrition resources.

Following Hurricane Helene, Mackenzie participated in disaster relief efforts with local organizations, coordinated multi-state donations of supplies, and helped raise funds to support rebuilding efforts in Old Fort, NC. These experiences strengthened her belief that meaningful change means moving beyond temporary relief and creating sustainable, community-driven change that improves access to essential resources while honoring the strengths and voices of the people who live there.

Originally from Australia, raised in Florida and now deeply rooted in WNC, Mackenzie is excited to contribute to Dogwood’s work advancing equitable, sustainable change across the region.

In her free time, she enjoys trail running, climbing, yoga, and spending time with her dog, Indiana Bones, and her loved ones.
